PAUL: (Laughter) I guess it was more appropriate for me growing up in Phoenix. And the contrast between that and the depression and anxiety you describe in your memoir, which - a lot of your memoir is about living through the pandemic, like, the first almost year of the pandemic. So I think that led to my love of these 1920s songs, you know, the Tin Pan Alley stuff. She also stars in the new series "Schmigadoon!," which is a very smart, funny and loving satire of musicals from the '40s and '50s. It was at the 2019 Christmas party, that Cecily's agent made her meet him. I met Daisy Eagen. And I can't - she's so far away. GROSS: And he's not just a Broadway producer. STRONG: You know, luckily, I have producers there and and Lorne, too, and I feel very taken care of by the show. It's such a contrast for me seeing the joy in "Schmigadoon!" So we just were relying on testing. GROSS: And it just reminded me, too, that when I was in school, we had to learn some of that kind of dancing - you know, like, square dancing. GROSS: Well, in some ways, maybe it was a good thing because you ended up - after going to Catholic school, you ended up in a performing arts high school, which is where you really fit in. And it's like, this is still when New York City is really the epicenter, and our show is so about New York City. And so I think, more than anything, it made me realize, like, that's what depression does to you. If you're an avid fan of Saturday Night Live, you already know Cecily Strong. So right away I was like, oh, God. I should really just drink olive juice; it'd be safer. STRONG: Yes. GROSS: I love the way mansplaining becomes like, don't man-terrupt me (laughter).
